A cat sitter over Christmas - how to sort it

Christmas is when the most people want to go away at the same time. That makes a cat sitter harder to find, because neighbours, friends and catteries are often already busy. Start looking early, ideally in November.

There are a few ways to sort it. A neighbour who looks in once or twice a day is best for most cats, they get to stay at home. A friend or relative can stay at your place while you are away. A cattery suits some cats, but many get stressed by moving, and places often run out well before Christmas.

On Kattkompis you can ask neighbours nearby for cat sitting. It is free and nobody charges, people help each other. Many who are not travelling over Christmas are happy to step in, and some have cats of their own and would like help back later.

Meet before you leave. Show where the food is, how much the cat eats and where the litter box is. Write down the number of your vet and your own. Hand over the key in good time so you can check that it works.

Think about the Christmas decorations too. Poinsettias, lilies and amaryllis are poisonous to cats, and tinsel and ribbon can be swallowed. Put them away before you leave, and ask the sitter to keep an eye out.
